Chuck Close exhibition

Chuck Close exhibition

St Cuthbert's Chapel, Ushaw Durham

The dramatic black and white portrait tapestries of American hyper-realist artist Chuck Close will be exhibited in a religious setting for the first time.

Chuck Close, who is renowned for his highly inventive techniques of painting the human face, will become a part of the congregation, including a portrait of former US President Barack Obama that has never before been exhibited in the UK.

The imposing portraits which will also include artists Ellen Gallagher, Lyle Harris, Cindy Sherman and Kiki Smith, alongside a self- portrait of the artist himself, will hang over the pews either side of the chapel. Close produces intricate hyper realistic portraits of friends and family, as well as famous icons including political figures, fashion models, musicians and other artists. The artist starts the creative process by taking Polaroid images, each of which is then digitally woven into a tapestry by US artists printmaking specialists Magnolia Editions.
